A tough year for growing

I will be contending with odd weather and drought this year. Already, early potato growth has died following a few unusually frosty nights for April. My tomato plants are indoors tonight and probably every night this week.

Many more counties in the southern half of England are now officially in drought. Water authorities have banned the use of hose pipes. I don't usually use a hose to water my vegetables but I will do my bit for water conservation.

The water butt is full, along with other containers that I have filled. The water won't last long so I intend channeling bath water into the garden for irrigation.

This year I have double the space for growing. Not much though. About 10 square meters. Packed into it and a few containers are 40 potato plants, 8 tomato plants, 50 shallots, 100 onions and 3 tubs of salad greens.

Like you we have drought conditions here in yorkshire - but thankfully its been raining nonstop for the past week! We are still getting frosts though and my toms are staying well under cover.
