Whilst I am happy to read about the solar farms being built in the UK a thought has come to mind.
Namely, that these farms are being built on valuable farmland. There is (or maybe that is now was) a government grant for people to put solar panels on the roofs of their homes.
Why don't people put their heads together and rent the roofs of private homes or give them money off their electricity bills so that solar panels can be put on private roofs. That will free up the land for food crops or bio-mass.
Of course, that won't happen because the evil triumvirate of bankers, corporations and politicians want to take us for every penny they can get and want us to pay to put solar panels on our roofs.
I would have thought a solar panel on a private roof would be a lot more secure than in an open field in the middle of nowhere. I can see a lot of these solar farms being ransacked as is the railway system for copper wire.

My husband reckons they could put little wind generators on every lamp post and tall structure along the motorway to generate energy too but it would take a highly funded government lead research of 15 years to decide it was a good idea.
Regarding your uni lodgings woes, my daughter had a similar experience with her unite flat, the floor was sticky with filth when we went to pick her up and one clever person had switched the freezer off overnight, the result was left in there for the remainder of the term .
Interesting about the zopa information.
I just cannot understand this about using up more wonderous countryside!
There's enough unused industrial roof space to fulfill more than enough PV installations in the UK.
Christ, just drive past Bedford and all the Distribution warehouses! Why doesn't "The Gov" or once agree on a long term plan of togetherness and start fitting PV Units to them!!!
Then start on the task of actually lowering everones electricty useage, oh yeah, then get rid of all the Energy Companies and this goddam "free choice" rubbish!!!
State provided Energy for all at a standard rate, non profit making and independently moderated,
Rant over! Love the site!
Glad you like the site Bookem.
I like the idea of free electricity for all. It is not a mad idea and is quite achievable.
Of course, the corporations, bankers and politicians will lose money from it and won't allow it to happen.
If everyone got rid of their fridge freezer and installed a few PV panels then we could all do without electricity companies.
I don't see the need to own a fridge. Just get what you need, on the day, from a supermarket. Let the supermarkets waste money keeping things cold.
By building solar panel arrays on farm land, expect agriculture to suffer as the latter aspect provides the backbone of a strong economy more than renewable energy. A careful balance must be struck where solar power for farms as an expansion will make agriculture more sufficient. Make them atop the tractors too.
